Ingredients

  • 4 slices Brioche or Gluten-Free Bread, sliced thick
  • 1 cup Whole Milk or Cream Can sub in half & half, or 2% milk
  • 1 Egg, Large
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup Butter
  • 1 tbsp Orange Juice
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/8 tsp Sea Salt, fine
  • 1/4 cup Butter, salted can substitute unsalted
  • 1 cup Fresh Fruit, sliced
  • 4 tbsp Maple Syrup

Instructions

  • Slice the bread into thick slices.
  • In a large shallow bowl add the 1 cup of milk/cream, 1 large egg, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1 tbsp of orange juice, and 1/8 tsp of sea salt. Mix well until fully combined.
  • Add the sliced bread in batches to the custard. Let it sit in the custard for a few minutes, then flip the sliced bread and let it soak in the custard for another 1-2 minutes.
  • In a large skillet on medium low heat add enough butter to coat the bottom of it once it's melted.
  • Remove the sliced bread from the custard letting excess batter run off, then place the bread into the skillet. Cook as many slices as you can in the skillet.
  • Fry the one side of the bread until lightly crispy and brown approximately 1 minute, then flip and brown the second side.
  • Repeat using the rest of the slices, adding more butter as needed.
  • Once the bread is lightly browned remove to a plate and top with a bit of butter, desired fruit toppings, and a drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

Greenlite Gluten-Free Bread is a good option if you can find it. I usually find it at Whole Foods or Wegmans.
You can use dairy-free milk and butter if needed.
