1cupWhole Milk or CreamCan sub in half & half, or 2% milk
1Egg, Large
1tspCinnamon
1/4 cupButter
1tbspOrange Juice
1/2tspVanilla Extract
1/8 tspSea Salt, fine
1/4cupButter, saltedcan substitute unsalted
1cupFresh Fruit, sliced
4tbspMaple Syrup
Instructions
Slice the bread into thick slices.
In a large shallow bowl add the 1 cup of milk/cream, 1 large egg, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract, 1 tbsp of orange juice, and 1/8 tsp of sea salt. Mix well until fully combined.
Add the sliced bread in batches to the custard. Let it sit in the custard for a few minutes, then flip the sliced bread and let it soak in the custard for another 1-2 minutes.
In a large skillet on medium low heat add enough butter to coat the bottom of it once it's melted.
Remove the sliced bread from the custard letting excess batter run off, then place the bread into the skillet. Cook as many slices as you can in the skillet.
Fry the one side of the bread until lightly crispy and brown approximately 1 minute, then flip and brown the second side.
Repeat using the rest of the slices, adding more butter as needed.
Once the bread is lightly browned remove to a plate and top with a bit of butter, desired fruit toppings, and a drizzle of maple syrup.
Notes
Greenlite Gluten-Free Bread is a good option if you can find it. I usually find it at Whole Foods or Wegmans. You can use dairy-free milk and butter if needed.
