Burgers with Caramelized Onions & Zesty Sauce

Using your favorite burger recipe and adding these caramelized onions and zesty sauce will be a hit at your next barbecue.

Do you love burgers as much as I do? While I have always been a basic burger person with the usual condiments switching it up has been a really nice surprise. Here is an easy way to step up your burger game, by adding a little bit of sweetness combined with the zesty sauce that makes for a yummy burger.

 The zesty sauce is a great for dipping your french fries into.

Ingredients

Burger Buns – Use your favorite regular or gluten-free burger buns here.

Burgers – I usually by the pre-made burgers but you can also use your favorite burger recipe. You can use beef or turkey.

Cheese – Cheddar, or American works really well here.

Pickles – Adds a nice salty/spicy flavor, don’t use the bread and butter kind.

Tomatoes – Pick your favorite tomato for this, beefsteak, vine ripened, heirloom, etc.

Lettuce – Iceberg lettuce is a good choice, you can either shred it or leave in whole pieces.

FOR THE CARAMELIZED ONIONS

Vidalia Onions – You can use a regular sweet onion but the vidalia onion makes a good amount and works beautifully in this recipe.

Olive Oil – Use your favorite cooking olive oil, not the finishing kind. You can sub in canola or vegetable oil.

Salt – For flavor, your using a pinch

Sugar – To help speed up the caramelization process, and to add sweetness.

Balsamic Vinegar – (Optional) to add a bit of flavor to the onions.

FOR THE ZESTY BURGER SAUCE

Mayo – Use your favorite brand

Ketchup – Use your favorite brand

Garlic Powder – To add flavor 

Worcestershire Sauce – For flavor, can’t be omitted

Black Pepper – To add some heat and spice.

Instructions

Caramelized Onions

  • Peel and thinly slice the Vidalia onion.
  • In a large sautè pan warm 3 tbsp of olive oil then add the sliced onion to the pan.
  • Sautè on med-low heat stirring occasionally until the onions start to get soft and slightly brown.
  • Add a pinch of salt and a 1/2 tsp of sugar and stir.
  • Continue stirring until the onions are really soft and lightly browned and jammy looking.
  • Let the cool then put in a storage container and refrigerate.
  • Take out a 1/2 hour before serving.

Zesty Burger Sauce

  • In a small bowl combine the mayo, ketchup, garlic powder, worchestershire sauce, and black pepper. Stir to blend.
  • Cover and place in the refrigerator for an hour to let the flavors blend.  

The Burger

  • Grill your burgers to your preferred doneness then top with cheese.
  • Add your favorite toppings, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes
  • Then top with burger sauce and caramelized onions.

Materials

Caramelized Onions

  • 1 Vidalia Onions can use 2 regular yellow onion if desired
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar (optional)

Zesty Burger Sauce

  • 1/2 cup Mayonaisse
  • 1/4 cup Ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper

Burgers

  • 6 Beef or Turkey Burgers Homemade or pre-made patties
  • 6 slices America, Cheddar, or Swiss Cheese
  • 6 Regular or Gluten-Free Burger Buns
  • 1/2 head Iceberg Lettuce, shredded
  • 1-2 Tomatoes, sliced
  • Pickles

Instructions

Make the Caramelized Onions

  • Peel and thinly slice the Vidalia onion, discarding the tip and root end.
  • In a large sautè pan warm the olive oil on med-low heat.
  • Add the sliced onions to the pan and coat with the olive oil.
  • Cook stirring occasionally, once the onion start to soften add a pinch of salt and 1/2 tsp of sugar (optional). Watch that they don't burn, if the onions are getting to dark lower the heat.
  • Cook until the onions appear soft, jammy and have a nice light to medium brown color 30-60 min.
  • Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator. Remove from the refrigerator 1/2 hour before serving so they come to room temp.

Make The Zesty Burger Sauce

  • Combine the mayo, ketchup, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and 1/2 tsp of black pepper into a bowl. Mix well, taste if it's not spicy enough add the remaining black pepper.
  • Refrigerate covered and let flavors blend together for at least 2 hours.

Cook & Assemble Burgers

  • Cook burgers until desired level of doneness.
  • Top with cheese and melt if desired.
  • Add remaining toppings as desired finishing off with caramelized onions and burger sauce.

Notes

Store caramelized onions covered in the refrigerator up to 5 days or you can freeze them.
Store the zesty burger sauce in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
The burger sauce is great for dipping french fries.
You can use the smaller onions but keep in mind you will need to use more than one. The Vidalia onion is on the larger side so you don't have to use as many. 
If you want to double the caramelized onion recipe I suggest using two large pans so the onions have room to breathe and not steam themselves. It will also make the process go a bit quicker.
