Turkey and Apple Sandwich with Bacon

While this turkey and apple sandwich with bacon is great any time of year, it’s perfect in the fall when apples are in season and you can use whichever apple you love.

I love a good melty grilled cheese sandwich and making it fancy by adding different ingredients is always fun for me. For fall I’m loving using in season apples and of course some bacon. Fresh herbs are still bloom so I always like to add a bit for fun and flavor.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • You can make it gluten-free
  • Use your favorite apple, mine is Gala
  • Bacon, need I say more
  • It’s filling, tasty, and comforting

Ingredients

BreadUse your favorite sandwich bread, gluten-free if needed. I love the Canyon Bakehouse Heritage Whole Grain Bread

Turkey Deli turkey or sliced homemade roasted turkey breast

Apple – Use your favorite apple but Gala, Honeycrisp, or Granny Smith will work well here, sliced

Bacon You only need one or two slices

Cheddar Cheese – I prefer shredded because I think it melts quicker but you can use sliced. Mild, medium or sharp cheddar will work.

Butter – Salted or unsalted works

Fresh Thyme (Optional) – I like the slight flavor it gives to the bread but is not necessary

S & P – To taste, go light on the salt as other ingredients are on the salty side.

Instructions

  1. Cook one to two slices of bacon, drain and set it aside, cook more if you are making multiple sandwiches.
  2. Heat a small to medium size skillet on medium heat.
  3.  Add 1 tbsp of butter to the skillet, once the butter is melted sprinkle the melted butter with the fresh thyme and some black pepper. Place a slice of bread onto the butter mixture and spread it around so the butter coats the bread.
  4. Generously add the shredded cheddar cheese on top of the bread, followed by the turkey, bacon, and apple slices.
  5. Butter one side of the top bread slice then sprinkle it with some fresh thyme and black pepper. Place it on top of the sandwich.
  6. Cover the pan with a lid to help the cheese melt.
  7. Once the one side is browned and the cheese is beginning to melt, flip the sandwich and cover again.
  8. Cook until both sides are nicely browned and the cheese is nice and melted.
  9. Remove from the pan and sprinkle with some flaky sea salt (Optional).

Materials

  • 2 pieces Sandwich bread slices, sourdough, white, etc. Use gluten-free bread if needed
  • 2 pieces Bacon, cooked and drained
  • 2 tbsp Butter, unsalted Can use salted
  • 2-4 slices Deli Turkey
  • 2-3 slices Apple, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup Cheddar Cheese, shredded or 2 slices of cheddar cheese Can use more
  • 1/2 tsp Thyme, fresh Optional
  • Black Pepper
  • Flaky Salt Optional

Instructions

  • Cook the 2 slices of bacon, drain and set aside.
  • Heat 1 tbsp of butter in a medium size skillet on medium low heat.
  • Once the butter is melted, sprinkle 1/4 tsp of the fresh thyme and a bit of black pepper over the melted butter, then place a slice of bread on top of the butter mixture. Swirl the bread around so it gets coated in the butter.
  • Add the shredded cheddar cheese, turkey, apple slices, and bacon.
  • Butter the top slice of bread with the remaining butter. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 tsp of fresh thyme and a bit of black pepper on top of the buttered bread. Top the sandwich.
  • Cover the sandwich to help the cheese melt. Once the bottom is browned flip the sandwich and cover again for another 1 minute or so.
  • Remove from the skillet and sprinkle with some flaky salt.

Notes

Adjust quantities if making more than one sandwich or if using a larger slice of bread.
If using salted butter omit the flaky salt at the end to prevent the sandwich from becoming to salty.
