Years ago on a trip to Greece I had my first authentic gyro. When they were taking our order they asked if we wanted French fries in it and we looked at each other and said “yes, of course”. Fast forward to this mediterranean lamb bowl recipe, it has all the flavors reminiscent of a gyro. It starts with seasoned lamb burgers which are grilled to perfection, alongside grilled red onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumbers. The whipped garlic feta compliments all of the dish and alongside it, are the French fries. Since my family loves burgers you may also find this Burgers with Caramelized Onions & Zesty Sauce or this Italian Style Smash Burger of interest.

Ingredients
Lamb – You will need 1 lb of ground lamb
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
Salt – Use fine sea salt or regular table salt
Black Pepper
Dried Oregano
Red Onion – One large red onion
Extra Virgin Olive Oil – To add to the whipped feta but also to coat the red onions before grilling.
Feta – Use a block of plain feta in water. Do not buy the pre-crumbled feta
Greek Yogurt – Plain greek yogurt (1 small container)
Lemon Zest – You will zest one whole lemon
Lemon Juice – 1 tsp of lemon juice, use a fresh lemon for the best flavor
Garlic Clove – 1 grated garlic clove
Cherry Tomatoes – Sliced in half
Lettuce – I used butter lettuce but you can use red leaf lettuce or iceberg lettuce
Cucumber – One small cucumber chopped into bite size pieces
French Fries – Frozen shoestring fries work the best

Instructions
To a food processor add 8 oz of feta cheese, 5.3 oz of greek yogurt, the zest of 1 lemon, 1tsp of lemon juice, and 1 medium garlic clove. Mix until combined then add 4 tsp of the extra virgin olive oil. Mix again scraping the bowl as needed until the feta/yogurt mixture is smooth about 5-6 minutes. Set aside.

Make the Lamb Burgers
In a medium size bowl combine the ground lamb, 1 tsp of garlic powder, 1/2 tsp of onion powder, 1 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of black pepper and 1/2 tsp of dried oregano.

Mix well and shape into 4 patties approximately 4 oz each.

Cut the red onion into thick slices, then place them into a bowl. Drizzle the slices with 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle them with salt and pepper if desired. Gently mix until combined.
Pre-heat the oven to 425°F. Place half of the bag of french fries onto the baking sheet and cook to package directions.
Grill the burgers over direct medium heat flipping as needed until cooked to your preference (160°F is well done).
While the burgers are cooking place the red onions on the grill and cook flipping regularly until they are soft and charred, about 4-5 minutes.
Assemble the bowls
Place a handful of lettuce into a bowl then top with the lamb burgers, tomatoes, cucumbers, grilled red onions, and a large spoonful of the whipped feta.

Drizzle a bit of extra virgin olive oil over everything and add a squish of lemon over it if desired.
Recipe tips
- Choose a plain block of feta in water. Do not use crumbled feta cheese
- You can grill the red onions and the burgers at the same time
